Ayatollah Jannati reelected Guardian Council chief

TEHRAN – Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati was reelected as the secretary of the Guardian Council on Wednesday.

Mohammad Reza Alizadeh and Abasali Kadkhodaee were also voted to remain in their posts as the council’s deputy secretary and spokesman respectively.
Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah issued a decree on July 15, appointing three religious jurists to the council including Ayatollah Jannati.
On July 18, Majlis also voted for three jurists to the GC.
The Guardian Council is composed of six Islamic jurists who are directly appointed by the Supreme Leader and six lawyers who are elected by parliament.
Constitutionally, the GC is in charge of vetting election candidates for presidency, Parliament and the Assembly of Experts. Ensuring the compatibility of legislation passed by Parliament with the criteria of Islam and the Constitution is among other duties of the council
